Terrific Turkey
This showstopping headband is sure to be the hit of your Thanksgiving festivities!

Materials
2 yellow, 2 red, and 2 orange construction paper copies of the pattern located here.
two 2" x 12" brown construction paper strips
white, red and yellow construction paper scraps
scissors
stapler
marker
glue

Directions
1. Staple the brown strips together at one end. Size it to your head and staple the remaining ends to form a headband.
2. Cut off any excess after stapling.
3. Cut out one of the feathers and glue them to on side of the headband.
4. Glue the turkey facial features to the headband as shown.
5. Use a marker to make additional details on the headband.

Curriculum Connection Social Studies
Native Americans first introduced the Pilgrims to wild turkeys as a source of food. As a tradition, families eat turkey on Thanksgiving. Invite each student to share one of his family's Thanksgiving traditions.

Gobble up this craft full of feathery fun-youngsters will be glad you did!

Materials (per child)
wooden ice-cream spoon
craft feathers
2 wiggle eyes
orange and red construction paper scraps
1" piece of magnetic tape
scissors
glue

Directions
1. Glue the craft feathers to one side of the wooden spoon to create a turkey.
2. Glue the wiggle eyes to the spoon as shown.
3. Cut a beak, feet, and a wattle from the construction paper scraps and glue them to the turkey.
4. Adhere the magnetic tape to the back of the turkey.

Curriculum Connection Science
Provide a variety of real feathers for students to examine. Have your youngsters compare and contrast the real feathers to those used in the projects. Invite each child to name one way the feathers are alike and one way they are different.

 


Thanksgiving Name Card
Decorate your students' desks with these Thanksgiving name cards!

Materials (per child)
cardboard templates of the name card pattern found here.
9" x 12" sheet of colored construction paper
1" squares of colored tissue paper
pencil
scissors
glue
black marker

Directions
1. Fold the construction paper into thirds. Unfold.
2. Trace a name card pattern onto the paper so that it overlaps the top and middle selection as shown.
3. Cut along the portion of the tracing that extends onto the top third only.
4. Twist a square of tissue paper around the eraser end of the pencil.
5. Dip the eraser end into glue and apply it to the traced shape.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the entire shape is covered with tissue squares.
7. Write your name in marker on the name card.
8. Fold back a half-inch of the bottom third.
9. Fold the top third back and glue it to the half-inch fold to create a standing sign.

Curriculum Connection Language Arts
Challenge your youngsters to practice their alphabetizing skills. Have a small group of students hold their name cards and stand in front of the class. Invite the other youngsters to direct the children to stand in ABC order according to their names. Repeat with a new set of students until every child has had a turn.
